What Are Medicare Advantage Plans?
Medicare Advantage Plans (also called Part C) are an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and combine your hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage into one plan.
Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and may offer additional benefits not included in Original Medicare.
How Medicare Advantage Works
When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:
- You must continue paying your Medicare Part B premium
- You may have an additional plan premium (many plans have $0 premiums)
- You receive your Medicare benefits through the private insurance company instead of directly through Original Medicare
Medicare Advantage plans are required to provide at least the same level of coverage as Original Medicare, but they often include extra benefits.
